The Ultimate Peacemaker

Today's Scripture: Colossians 1:15-20

Today's Insights:

In Colossians 1:15-20, the apostle Paul emphasizes the supremacy of Jesus Christ. He describes Jesus as "the image of the invisible God" and "the firstborn over all creation" (v. 15). This passage underscores that Jesus is not a created being but the preexistent Creator of all things. Paul clarifies that "in him all things were created" and "he is before all things" (vv. 16-17), highlighting Christ's eternal nature and His role in creation.

Today's Devotional:

In 1987, French high-wire artist Philippe Petit performed a daring walk across the Hinnom Valley in Jerusalem. Invited by Mayor Teddy Kollek for that year's Israel Festival, Petit traversed a cable stretched between the Jerusalem Cinematheque and Mount Zion. Midway through his walk, he released a pigeon as a symbol of peace, aiming to momentarily unite diverse audiences and help them forget their differences. This act, while captivating, was a fleeting gesture towards harmony.

In contrast, Jesus Christ's sacrifice on the cross achieved lasting reconciliation. Paul writes, "God was pleased... to reconcile to himself all things... by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross" (Colossians 1:19-20). Unlike symbolic acts, Jesus' death brought genuine and eternal peace between God and humanity. Through His sacrifice, those once alienated from God are now offered reconciliation and peace.

Reflect & Pray:

  • How do you experience the peace that Jesus provides?
  • In what ways can you share this peace with others today?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for the true and lasting peace You secured through Your sacrifice. Help me to live in this peace daily and to be a conduit of Your peace to those around me. Amen.
